Artist Statement: " There’s the simple/surface level meaning that any viewer can see, but there’s also the deeper meaning and true purpose of the painting that is less intuitive. Viewers of MVP #41 can likely tell I’m a Dirk Nowitzki fan and I want to highlight his greatness by showing that Abraham Lincoln would have been a Dirk fan. It’s meant to be fun, geared towards fellow Mavericks fans and maybe even initiate a conversation about some parallels that Nowitzki may share with Lincoln.
The less intuitive meaning and my source of motivation to make this piece has more of a mass appeal. Ultimately, I’m pointing out how important athletes are to society these days. Children (including myself) look at the abilities of an athlete and want to be just like them. Abraham Lincoln is the type of individual children used to look up to as they grew up and the impressive characteristics of our forefathers have been replaced by running/jumping/ball handling abilities. Inspiration by acts of honor and integrity are replaced by acts of shooting and dunking, etc….
